Gino and Joe's NY Style Pizza
Having a background in business explains why Mike is at the restaurant everyday as he is still trying to understand the analytics behind the restaurant, but also to make the food. Once he understands the analytics a bit more Mike does hope to open up one or two more locations in Erie. When he first took over the restaurant, Mike told me that the previous owners taught him how to make the pizzas like they made them. What makes his restaurant different from other pizza places is their product. Mike and his employees make their own dough and sauce, and they even have a secret recipe for the sauce that only he knows. Gino and Joe’s even gets their ingredients from local suppliers and use fresh tomatoes to make their sauce.
Even though people may struggle to find them, he believes that their product is unlike any others here, which is why word of mouth is key for them. Most pizzas in Erie have a thicker crust, but Gino and Joe’s sticks to their name by making an authentic New York style pizza that has a thinner crust and is hand tossed.
The restaurant itself has been open for a couple years, but he just started owning it a few months ago. When Mike and his employees took over, he decided to keep the name since the customers were already familiar with it. He also determined to not change the product, because he thinks the pizza is fantastic, it was the business he bought, and you should not be in the business if you do not like the product.
Some of their best promotions are their pizza and wing specials especially during football season, but their most popular pizza order is “hands down” pepperoni. Hawaiian comes in a close second place and is also Mike’s favorite order.
In addition to adding another location or two, Mike also hopes to offer student discounts and get involved with the OneCard system at colleges and universities in the area.
When the customers call and say how much they loved their food and are going to return, Mike feels that he is doing something right. His best experience is having customer satisfaction and seeing them happy or excited for their food. Mike wants to the customers to let him know either way if they liked the food or if there is something they should change.
