U Pick 6 Tap House
Someone once said that the secret recipe to a successful business is to work hard, and that person is John Melody the owner of a few restaurants in Erie.
As the owner of the U Pick 6 Tap House, Public House, Harbor House, and Beer Store he is known by the public of Erie for not only his current restaurants, but also his past restaurants that he has owned and started where he was the face of the business. The two other restaurants that John has started are pretty well known by people visiting Erie and those that live here, the two are Molly Brannigan's and Cornerstone Bar and Grill.
He first came from Ireland to go to Mercyhurst University in 1986 on a soccer scholarship where he studied hospitality management. In January of 2002 he began his restaurant business venture by building and opening the Cornerstone Bar and Grill which plenty of current Mercyhurst students still go to. Ten months later he opened
Molly Brannigan's on State Street which have been expanded to three other location in Pennsylvania and one in Arizona.
U Pick 6 opened in 2011, and then Harbor House opened in 2015. The name came from the current trend at the time of people beginning to experiment with craft beers where people could mix and match and "U" pick or mix which ones you want to try. Right now he is working on a couple projects for the future, including a brewery company.
John does not really know why he went into the restaurant business, but what he does enjoy about it is that no two days are the same. Another reason why he enjoys the restaurant business is "the buzz of the business, dealing with people, and the public and employees." For all of the restaurants that he has started John has always had a business partner, and for Molly Brannigan's he eventually sold his own shares to the other partner. As for a "daily schedule," he does not have one because everyday is different and there is no same routine.
What he believes makes his restaurant special from others is their food and service, their price point, and their demographic. John said that their menu and design fits for anything and everything. Their restaurant has different seating for different groups of people; if some were there for happy hour they could go to the bar or if there is a big family there are big tables to seat them. Aside from their design and menu, John also believes that their value is their most successful method of keeping the customers coming in. He told me how value can mean something different to every person, some can think value are the prices or the food or the specials, but to him it is about the overall experience.
Their most popular items are their cheese and pepperoni pizza and their Italian "'Boli," but his favorites, other than everything, are their carbonara pizza and turkey burger. Some of their busiest times are lunch, nighttime, happy hour, dinner, but sometimes you just do not know.
Some of his best experiences in the restaurant business experiences are the stories he gets to hear of people meeting at his restaurant and ultimately getting married. Along with hearing that their customers had a positive experience, he also appreciates the feedback so they can adjust and maintain their business. Him and his employees want to give the customers value and if they are not receiving that, then let them know.
U Pick 6 is a restaurant for everyone and offers something for everyone. Located in the center of downtown it can be a good reason to have a date night or for a family dinner out during the week.
